I love the thought of people coming in my house and automatically feeling comfortable. When I was praying for a home I made a promise to allow God to use my home in any way He saw was necessary and thankfully He has used it in ways I never thought would be possible!
. . . . . . . . . .
So how do you make your home feel comfortable for you, your family, and your guest??
1. You pray for it and you pray for every person that comes in it! God will bless your nest if you just pray for it.
2. Decorate! By no stretch of imagination am I a professional interior designer or expert at anything in that area, but I love anything to do with decorating or designing.
When I’m decorating I love bringing old and new pieces together! If I find myself in a thrift store I look for old neutral colored books and fun shaped glass vessels. If I make it to an antique store I look for anything that seems unique or different. Obviously I have no idea what the value is to anything that I buy… if I think it’s a good fit for my home (& my wallet) I buy it.
3. Throw blankets! I swear if I go into a house and there’s a nice fluffy blanket waiting on me… I feel right at home every single time! There’s something about covering up that makes me feel comfortable, so I want that option for my people too!
4. Keep a pleasant smell! I only have about twenty candles around the house. Maybe I have a problem… but I’m positive it’s a good one! I just love knowing that the candles are lit, especially after a good long day of cleaning the house (then I know it doesn’t only smell clean, but it is clean!) Not only does it smell amazing, it’s one of the easiest ways to give the living area a cozy and calm ambiance.
5. Add some plants to bring a space to life. I always enjoy a little splash of greenery here and there. If you aren’t the best at keeping things alive go for a plant that doesn’t need a lot of maintenance! Or if you kill everything you touch maybe find a few realistic fake plants to help you out (just keep them dusted!).
6. Cookies! Baked goods are always a win… I don’t always bake cookies but I try to keep a platter or jar of cookies on my stove top at all times. And if you do this make sure to let everyone know they are there for the taking.
7. Throw pillows! Ask anyone that has ever been on my couch…. wait they can’t fit on my couch for the pillows! Only kidding! But really I love throw pillows and the coziness that comes along with them. You can easily pull the “look” of a space together by adding the perfect throw pillows on your furniture!
8. Photos! I love to share with the world how gorgeous my kiddos are (if you follow my Instagram I’m sure you are aware of this), so I keep their sweet faces out for all to see in my home. I also love the idea of framing your kids and putting them on the wall because they realize that this is their safe haven too!
9. On special occasions I like to add some fresh flowers in the living areas. This doesn’t have to be anything fancy… grab some wild flowers from the backyard and stick them in some water!
10. Cleanliness is the closest thing to Godliness… Well you won’t find that in scripture, but that’s only because He forgot it (only kidding!). By no means is my house always spotless and perfect… but I do think it is important to keep a clean house when possible! Having teenagers and toddlers running through it all day long doesn’t make it the easiest thing on my to do list… but I try my best and isn’t that what God ask of us?
. . . . . . . . . .
Proverbs 31:27 says, “She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness.”
I think that was God telling us to care and love the home that He blessed us with enough to keep it clean and beautiful. The inside of a home is a representation of the woman and she should take pride in it. That does not mean that she should have to do everything by herself… it means she’s basically the boss and you should complete the chore list she has wrote for you (I would insert a laughing emoji here if I could!).
I would love to say that my home has no room to improve and that everything works perfectly and there’s no mold hiding around somewhere… but I’ll just be honest with you, being a mom and taking care of the house is not an easy task. Life gets in the way and then one day you get home and realize the chore list is long and your body is running off a few hours of sleep from the other night!
. . . . . . . . . .
Although it’s not easy, I strive to maintain a home that is inviting and comforting to my family and friends. Mainly because I want them to stay longer and come back sooner!
Yay!! Go make your house feel like a home and invite your favorite people over. Oh and share with me how wonderful it goes.
Love you all!
